Nice to meet you! I’m a university student who loves exploring research to the fullest!
When people hear the word "research," their reactions can vary: “Is research really that enjoyable…?” “Dedicating yourself to research might be appealing, but isn’t it a bit worrying for the future...?” In general, I feel there are more negative opinions about it.
But let me tell you, research is fascinating! So, through this article, I want to share the incredible aspects of research with you. Although I’m just a third-year student who hasn’t fully immersed myself in research yet, here are the highlights of what I currently find appealing about it:
A space where you can unleash your intellectual curiosity.
A gateway to unknown aspects of society.
A place to discover and hone your strengths.
As a science student, I study a wide range of fields, such as control engineering (technology that enables vehicles to drive autonomously) and quantum mechanics (a challenging field where seemingly nonsensical phenomena occur in a microscopic world). Amidst these disciplines, I can’t help but think how exciting it must be to delve into the field that fascinates me the most.
When I first entered university, I vaguely believed I’d quickly find what I wanted to do and seamlessly connect it to my future career. But in reality, I found myself struggling:
There are so many jobs out there that it’s hard to choose.
Yet, programming and engineering jobs dominate advertisements and media exposure.
This made it difficult for me to visualize my future. I believe the reason “programming” is so widely promoted in society is not just because there’s demand, but also because it’s something anyone can easily start.
In contrast, engaging in research allows you to learn specialized fields that you may not have encountered before. Initially, I found myself wondering, “What’s the point of this research?” However, as I began to understand its applications, I was able to explore new dimensions of society previously unknown to me. It’s precisely because research isn’t something you can just casually start that it allows you to discover unique aspects of the world, and I find this deeply captivating.
I believe it’s very important to build expertise in a specific area. If you’re the only one deeply knowledgeable in your field, you can provide insights that no one else can.
That said, many university students—including my friends—think, “The research I’m doing now has nothing to do with the job I want in the future, so it’s meaningless.” They conduct research simply to graduate, often concluding their university years by saying: “Even if the research itself wasn’t useful, the logical thinking I gained will help me in society.”
While they’re not entirely wrong, I feel it’s a waste not to pursue a job related to the field you chose to study out of personal interest when enrolling in university.
As I see it, research isn’t just enjoyable on its own but also helps you enhance your personal value and connect it to your future.
Through this platform, I want to convey the true worth of research to more people.
In upcoming articles, I plan to share how what I’ve learned at university applies to society, as well as introduce the new worlds I’ve discovered through my studies.
Lastly, I feel that many articles—regardless of field—focus primarily on providing knowledge, often lacking the author’s personal opinions. So, in the articles I’ll be posting, I’ll focus on sharing my own thoughts and insights, drawing on my imagination to provide perspectives that broaden readers’ horizons.
I’ll do my best to reach as many people as possible!
